Discover Fedcap and Jacqueline Corey – a  transatlantic look at social value

Ready to explore transnational perspectives on social value? As part of preparing for our upcoming Member Connect on June 11th , I met with our guest Jacqueline Corey from Fedcap UK who has experienced both the Canadian and British social value environment! 

Jacqueline Corey became the Social Value Manager for Fedcap UK in 2022. Fedcap UK is a non-profit organisation focused on offering employability solutions and opportunities for people with barriers to economic wellbeing. Jacqueline’s previous volunteering for the UN Development Program gave her a start in community development projects and ignited her passion for applying the UNSDG globally. She transitioned from Fedcap Canada to pursue her role, alongside a Masters in Health Promotion, and has led Fedcap UK’s social impact reporting over the last three years.  

Due to her dual experience, Jacqueline offers insights into the UK social value environment all the while being able to compare them with the system in place in Canada. The most striking difference is the presence of the Social Value Act in the UK, which was passed in 2012 and mandates that all government contracts attribute 10% to demonstrating social value. This procurement policy covers specific themes including health, the environment and EDI (equality diversity and inclusion). Depending on the funder (for instance at a specific local council), the demonstration might need to target a specific area of the Act.  

When it comes to Fedcap UK, beyond the normative effect of the Social Value Act, the goals of being a driver in the social value space are inscribed within the organisation’s mission. Two years after making their Social Value promise of 25%, Fedcap UK has achieved a 31% rate of Social Value Return on Investment (SV-ROI). Operated across five key goals that target employees, customers, environment, communities and partners (with their supply chains), their social impact reporting has also been pushed significantly by efforts to optimise their data processes. Combining case study approaches with the SV-ROI calculations by the Social Value Portal, which maps out them out to match the Social Value Act, means Fedcap UK has been able to actively quantify their advances alongside driving social value.  

So, what can Canadian social value practitioners take-away from these insights? First, that they play a key role to keep driving social value alongside advocacy for policy reforms and for a “Canadian Social Value Act”. Second, that they should tune into the event on June 11th to hear more from Jacqueline herself on this transatlantic look at Social Value.
